The Coachman Collection and heavier Grand Harbor insulated doors step up to a 5-inch high-lift drum with thicker 3/16-inch cable minimum. Clopay’s Avante and modern glass-aluminum doors use a proprietary drum geometry that does not interchange with standard hardware.

We check three things before pulling a part: the door width and height (printed on the inner face label near the top right hinge), the drum casting number stamped on the hub, and whether the existing cable is right-hand or left-hand wind. For Clopay doors, we generally recommend OEM-equivalent drums from DDM Garage Doors or Clopay’s own service parts channel rather than generic hardware-store stock, because the casting tolerances on aftermarket drums vary enough to throw off cable wrap by a full revolution. Signs Your Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

There’s a safe middle ground here, and then there’s the line you shouldn’t cross.

What you can check: look at the cables with the door down and the opener disconnected. Fraying, rust, or a cable off the drum is visible. Check the drum set screws with the door closed and locked, though do not touch them. Note the door model number and drum casting number for whoever you call.

What you should not attempt: releasing torsion spring tension to swap a drum or cable. The springs on a standard double-car Clopay door store enough torque to break an arm or worse.
