Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement: The Anaheim Owner’s Guide

Clopay cable and drum replacement in Anaheim typically runs $130-$250 installed, and we stock the common Clopay drum sizes and cable lengths on every truck. Most Anaheim homeowners with a failed cable or drum call us in the morning and have the door running smooth by afternoon. You’ll usually notice the problem when one side of the door hangs lower than the other, or the opener strains and the door barely moves.

Which Clopay Models This Applies To

Clopay builds their doors around three cable and drum families, and getting the match wrong means the door winds uneven and eats itself alive in six months.

The Classic Collection and Gallery Collection steel doors use a standard-lift drum with a 4-inch diameter and 12-gauge galvanized cable, typically 1/8-inch for single-car and 3/16-inch for double-car widths. The Coachman Collection and heavier Grand Harbor insulated doors step up to a 5-inch high-lift drum with thicker 3/16-inch cable minimum. Clopay’s Avante and modern glass-aluminum doors use a proprietary drum geometry that does not interchange with standard hardware.

We check three things before pulling a part: the door width and height (printed on the inner face label near the top right hinge), the drum casting number stamped on the hub, and whether the existing cable is right-hand or left-hand wind. For Clopay doors, we generally recommend OEM-equivalent drums from DDM Garage Doors or Clopay’s own service parts channel rather than generic hardware-store stock, because the casting tolerances on aftermarket drums vary enough to throw off cable wrap by a full revolution. That matters on a 16-foot door in Anaheim Hills where the headroom is already tight.

We’re an independent service shop. We are not affiliated with Clopay, but we’ve been ordering their parts long enough to know which cross-references hold up and which ones don’t.

Signs Your Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

  • The door hangs crooked in the opening. One cable has slipped or frayed, so that side drops faster. The drum may also have a worn groove letting the cable stack uneven. If you keep running the opener, the good side carries all the weight and the door panel starts to rack.
  • Loud bang or snap from the garage, then the door won’t move. That’s a cable letting go. On Clopay doors with torsion springs, the remaining cable is now holding double tension. Do not pull the emergency release and do not try to lift the door by hand.
  • Cable is unraveling at the bottom bracket or shows rust blooming at the loops. Anaheim’s marine layer keeps humidity high near the coast, and garages without ventilation turn cable fittings green inside two years. The drum grooves hide corrosion until the cable starts shedding strands.
  • Door rises six inches and stops, or the opener hums without lifting. The drum is not transferring spring torque to the cable. Often the set screws have backed off, or the drum bore has wallowed out from running loose on the shaft.
  • Visible gaps between cable wraps on the drum. A healthy drum stacks cable in tight, even coils. Gaps mean the drum flange is worn or the cable has jumped a groove. This gets worse fast, and a jumped cable can chew through the track bracket.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range in Anaheim
Cable replacement (pair) $130-$250
Drum replacement (single) $140-$260
Cable + drum replacement (both sides) $220-$400

The $130-$250 cable range covers standard Clopay single-car and double-car doors with galvanized 7×19 aircraft cable. Heavier 8×19 stainless cable for coastal garages, or doors with high-lift or vertical-lift geometry, run toward the top of that band. Drum replacement adds parts cost because Clopay-compatible cast aluminum drums run $35-$65 each wholesale, plus the labor to release spring tension, slide the old drum, set the new one to proper cable wrap, and retension.

We quote flat before we start. You know the number. If we open it up and find a bent shaft or failing bearing plate, we stop and explain before adding anything. Every cable and drum job carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If it doesn’t run right, we come back. No paperwork to file, no argument.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here, and then there’s the line you shouldn’t cross.

What you can check: look at the cables with the door down and the opener disconnected. Fraying, rust, or a cable off the drum is visible. Check the drum set screws with the door closed and locked, though do not touch them. Note the door model number and drum casting number for whoever you call.

What you should not attempt: releasing torsion spring tension to swap a drum or cable. The springs on a standard double-car Clopay door store enough torque to break an arm or worse. We’ve seen homeowners in Anaheim Hills and the Colony district who watched a video and tried it anyway. Don’t. The cable is under several hundred pounds of load even with the door down, and the winding bars require specific technique.

We carry Clopay-compatible drums and cables on every truck. Most days we finish in one visit. Tell me what it’s doing. We’ll figure out the rest.
